A Disturbed High School Student Manifests Several Alcohol-Related Difficulties, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a fifteen year old high school sophomore who was displaying numerous alcohol-related problems at school. As a result, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his parents. His Mother and Father were "relatively conservative" and told Stephen that getting suspended from school was not a workable educational option. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his legs that could quite possibly inhibit his educational aspirations for the remainder of his adult life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were very let down that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his classmates in the second.

It was evident that his Mother and Father were in total agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his discussion with his Mom and Dad, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next afternoon.

When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related behavior caused quite a bit of anxiety by the school administrators.

Quite sincerely, Stephen was not sure why the principal suggested that he see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking activities? Since almost all of his classmates drink the same amount that he does, primarily, drinking is no big thing. Stated more directly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a big deal?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to short-circuit his ability to act like an accountable young man. As put into words by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's right for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was very organized for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that summarized various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied chiefly to teenagers.

After Miss Pender presented the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the short term and the long term effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also made the effort to verify what she was saying with alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everyone in general, and principally to underage drinkers.

To be sure, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly understood why he should not be engaging in hazardous and abusive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
