A Physical Education And Health Instructor Teaches Her Students About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-ed high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already gained a reputation as an instructor with teaching approaches that inspired and encouraged students to think and to learn.

For example, one Thursday afternoon she addressed the pupils in her classroom and said the following: "For the next two weeks we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely reveal that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted person, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol dependent person."

Miss Jackson then informed the class that each pupil would be responsible for studying two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class by way of a twenty minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the students in her class that after she reviews the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked her students to go over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, concerns, or questions. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, almost every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her classroom why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the most important difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when an alcohol addicted person suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to understand the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and stimulated her students to stop and think about a noteworthy health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
