A Young Couple Appraises Their Excessive Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Dreams, Hopes, And Aspirations

Frank and Linda have been dating one another for four years. They met while taking the same European history class at a medium size, countryside, private liberal arts college located in the Northern part of the United States. While they were in essence good buddies at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their second year of college.

Due to the fact both of them came from very traditional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first started to date. As the time advanced, then again, they began to go to more happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, keg parties, and football bashes. As a consequence, they slowly but surely began to drink more the longer they dated.

After they graduated from college, they both got jobs in a relatively large city that was located around fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they decided to move in with each other.

With any major change in an individual's life there is often something that elicits the specific change in question. For Linda and Frank the notion of having children and buying a new house was this "source of change." In brief, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda started to reflect on their excessive and hazardous drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their hazardous and abusive drinking.

Would their abusive and excessive drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending so much money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house?

From a different perspective, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a "drunk driving" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their heavy drinking was becoming a reality that they could not discount anymore. All of these questions plainly pointed to the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to get a more complete picture of the fact that they couldn't continue their heavy drinking if their dreams, hopes, and aspirations were to be accomplished.

Once they arrived at this conclusion, they informed their drinking pals about their their marital plans, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could start to realize their future aspirations, goals, and dreams.

Unpredictably, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been deliberating on their lives and concluded that their life-styles were totally focused on drinking. They also understood that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more responsible and manifest more consideration for their health, their plans, and for their careers in the next five or ten years.

After their heart-to-heart chat with their friends about their aspirations, hopes, and dreams, Frank and Linda actually started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their pals. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same perspective regarding their excessive drinking and their relatively short and long-term goals, plans, and aspirations.
