A Young Man Requires Treatment For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Substance Abuse

Approximately three months ago I had breakfast with a forty-three-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences extreme depression, has relationship issues, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship issues.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he basically has little or no energy to do much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete three semesters of graduate school in Spanish history.

Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and see his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something constructive about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol counseling that leads to long-term sobriety.

It may be asked how counseling would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are quite a few recently developed physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is entirely nothing constructive about drug addiction and abusive and hazardous drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the route to shattered relationships, a premature death, legal problems, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and poor work and school performance. Fourth, counseling for his relationship issues and his depression might help him cope with these psychological difficulties more effectively and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the determination to achieve much of anything in his life, it is evident that he urgently needs some hope for a better lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he requires for his severe depression and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and stick with his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug rehab and get the treatment he requires for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, passion, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, constructive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to seek the medical rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his life.
