Excessive And Irresponsible Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Constructive Change

It took quite a few years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's careless and excessive drinking. She was worn-out from seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending quality time with her and their two daughters. She was also worn-out from the second DUI Keith recently got. Additionally she was fed up from manufacturing reasons for her husband when he couldn't make it to his job due to his careless and abusive drinking.

Not only this but she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was worn-out from the precarious financial situation into which he had put his family because of his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.

One Monday evening when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something constructive to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the yellow pages under "alcohol rehabilitation" and found more than a few rehabilitation centers that were all located less than thirty-five miles away from where she and her husband lived.

When Sarah called each treatment facility she identified who she was and said that her spouse was exhibiting careless and hazardous drinking behavior. She also said that her spouse had an excellent health insurance at work and that outpatient or residential alcohol dependency rehab would be covered if a doctor in the company health network suggested the rehabilitation.

After listening to Sarah go over her husband's abusive drinking, the therapist in a compassionate but resolute manner explained to Sarah how she more likely than not played a part in her spouse's abusive and unhealthy drinking through the years. How? Essentially by justifying his behavior instead of allowing him to go through the results of his careless and hazardous drinking behavior.

More to the point, the doctor told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. The physician also highlighted the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her spouse's conduct. With the guidance and encouragement of the treatment team at the healthcare clinic, nonetheless, she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could discuss his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior with a physician.

Fortunately after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was not joking, he told her that he had been extremely alarmed by his abusive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat pleased to realize that Sarah wanted to do something productive about his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a healthcare professional at the local alcohol rehab clinic.

While simply calling a treatment facility does not mean that an individual's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is certainly a necessary component in the rehabilitation process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality assistance for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was greatly enhanced.
