Small Breed Canine Training
The reason why dog lovers have this preconceived view that small breed dogs are more challenging to condition than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should not be problematic.
Small dog training, is in no way different from training a puppy of any other bigger sized breed. Whilst training any dog will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, almost all other aspects remain the same, and the technique to training the pup should remain the same, regardless its size.
With that said, I will stray from the rule here, and agrree that small dog training may create problems in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Even so, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.
If a smallish breed pup is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smaller breed dog cannot be potty trained or poses difficulties in being crate trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this situation. Let us investigate how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are enjoyed because they are pretty, they are like toy characters. Owners enjoy having their pet sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the difficulty starts. The inherent aggressive characteristic of the puppy, is to assert ownership over its space, its food, even its master; all canines strive to be the alpha dog.
It is the hostile streak in the canine animal that induces it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, particularly when there are plenty of people gathered in the room.
This is a outright act of violence. Instead of admonishing the puppy, every owner bar none, would hug the pup, even though it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, developing the aggressive streak in the puppy. By doing this the owner has accepted the puppy's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a bigger dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is viewed as cute, just because one dog is little while the other is larger. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of checking it, when it exhibits this aggression against a larger dog.
The above are but instances as to why small breed dogs are aggressive, and positively not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Potty Training.
Owners have a propensity to lug their small dogs around no matter where they are, even while they are at home and that makes it practically impossible to bathroom train them
It is, as if by second nature that the owners of small dogs to lug the animal to the place where the pup should do its dirty business and then carry it back into the house.
It is this routine of carrying the pooch to its appointed toilet area that is the start of all dilemmas. In addition, ever since the pup is by and large carried around so often it has no way of it indicating to or alerting the owner that it has to poop.
Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be transported to their pooping area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small sized dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
