There are so many preparations, expenses and stresses that go together with preparing for a wedding ceremony. If couples aren't watchful they can get so involved with planning the event and trying to get all the details right that there's little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding she had three bridal showers to go to, reception plans to get in order and was trying to nail down a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third shower was scheduled at my house. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to make it unique for her. A few days before the shower we talked on the phone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having problems deciding on the best wedding songs for the ceremony. I recommended that she arrive the night before the bridal shower and stay all night and we would relax and I would help her create a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding ceremony. She thought this sounded like a good plan.

I did the majority of the preparations for the wedding shower prior to my niece arriving so that we could give attention to her needs. She stated that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress because the location they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to find a new location. We began by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding so we could get one need out of the way thereby giving confidence that the other would be managed as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the internet, listening to samples, placing some orders and that was that. Now on to the rehearsal dinner.

The rehearsal supper is normally handled by the groom's family; in fact most people refer to the occasion as the groom's dinner. My niece's fiance is from a different state so his family is willing to pay for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to assist with making the preparations. My niece had touched base with the restaurant where the wedding reception will be held, but the only room they have was the section where the wedding reception would be held. My niece explained that the plan was to decorate the wedding reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.

We called two nearby restaurants to see if they could handle the rehearsal dinner. Both had other gatherings scheduled. Her fiance's mom and dad are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were extra people to include in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her stress because she was attempting to suss out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart approved for the wedding, but not knowing the spot the rehearsal dinner would be happening limited her ability to plan a chart.

I asked my niece if she had called the church to look into if the fellowship area would be accessible. Everybody could just mingle and have a light catered meal. This would be quite a bit less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was available that evening. We called two delis and ordered food. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded great. He would make preparations to have a buddy of his tend bar and would arrange for the drinks.

The rehearsal dinner was a fine relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom did not feel pressured to sit in one spot while everyone ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the atmosphere was very casual and the out of town guests didn't have to attempt to find another place in an area that they were not familiar with.
